12 - Truth

The truth was not ambiguous. It was clear.

Sam Raha was adept at scamming and defrauding others for money. She had learnt it since her younger years when her parents would shamelessly scam other people.

Their role in society was sufficient enough to understand their reputation. Anyone with self-respect would stray far away from such sick and perverted individuals.

The amount of vitriol that came from this family was a foreshadow of how they would mesh with people from a family whose values included honesty, integrity and dignity.

Sam and her family thought that nobody would ever be able to catch them in their fraudulent acts.

But unfortunately they would all be sorely mistaken.

2025. 5 years since the deceit started.

And by now each and every lie was exposed.

Tom recalled one particular conversation with Sam along the beach.

“No matter what happens, we’re going to stay by each other’s side. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad” Tom said to Sam.

Sam agreed and said that she would never break this vow.

Sadly, this was one of the thousand times that Sam would lie. Because already in her mind, the plan was in motion. She never cared about anything else other than money and materialistic things.

She and her family had planned to trap Tom from a long time back.

The truth was that Sam was a hypocrite. A liar and a manipulator who was shameless. She had tortured and abused Tom, and then tried to play the victim and then got caught.

“I hope you and your family understand one day. The torture, the abuse that you and your family inflicted on others” Tom said to Sam.

“I pray you get back everything. Only then would a heartless person like you and your shameless and corrupt family will understand that you cannot just get away with hurting and using other people”.

Tom had never hated anyone in his life. He didn’t have any anger or hatred on anyone. But things had changed. This was the first time in his life. That he had met people who were completely perverted and corrupt. And they had used Tom in the most cynical and shameless manner.

If you really look closely, you’d know that this was inevitable. Each and every person around her wanted it to fail. It didn’t matter if the person was 16 or 53 years old. There was not a single person who wanted to not break the sacred bond of Sam’s marriage.

They would all act as if nothing had happened. They would keep up this facade for as long as they needed to break apart Sam and Tom.

And Sam would be okay with it all. She thought this was the way to survive. She thought she needed to be a manipulator and hypocrite to her own spouse because everyone around her were exactly like that.

She was completely exposed by the truth. Karma reached her. And gave her the punishment she truly deserved.

Tom had learnt the biggest lesson of his life half a decade back “Karma would always find a way to get back to you.” he thought.

He returned back at his old house looking for an item. When he opened one of his drawers, there was a dust filled envelope at the end of the drawer.

“Sam” it read on top of the envelope.

It was undelivered. And the last letter Tom had written for Sam 4 years ago.

He couldn’t exactly recall what was written on it. He dusted off the envelope and opened it”

A hand written letter by Tom was inside it.

It read:

“Dear Sam,

It’s extremely unfortunate. That you lied. Lied about almost everything. There was no need for it. And that was your biggest mistake.

You thought you’d be able to get away with betraying people but did you never stop to think about karma? That you were actually destroying yourself first.

You tried to be clever and play the victim. But did you not think that there is someone above us who is much more powerful than any of us who would let you get away with hurting people for your own motive and gains?

I’ve told you a thousand times. But you never seemed to listen.

I understood you better than most people. Reading this letter will make you clearly understand that.

I knew you had psychological problems. Some were not your fault but unfortunately some you could have avoided by being honest.

By actually depending on me and working together, you could’ve avoided the situation you’re in today.

Today, everyone knows the truth about you.

You were so used to playing the victim for the past 21 years that it was almost second nature. You were habituated to using people. No matter who that was. And you were a tactician who finally got caught.

I feel ashamed.
Ashamed to know that you were capable of being someone like that.

And it was my bad luck of not being able to help you.

Reflecting back, he was the same calm boy he was 10 years back. Only wiser and more mature. The lessons learned from the toxicity of a perverted person and her family would make him much more sharper.

It’s almost as if he was grateful for what Sam had done.
