11 - Past

“A person’s past shouldn’t matter” said Sam.

“Yes and No,” Tom replied with a calm but firm voice. “If we learn from our mistakes, if we genuinely take the full opportunity of a second chance, a fresh start at life, it shouldn’t matter. However, do most people take it?”

Tom was right. He knew the truth.

But he had forgiven Sam.

He genuinely gave her a fresh start. He never wanted to know about her past. Because he had a feeling that if he knew he would be reluctant to be with her.

So he chose to not know. For her sake.

Because he truly wanted Sam to be a better person. He was the only person who did. He did not want Sam to return to the dark days of her past.

Even when Sam had been given thousands of opportunities, she hadn’t taken it.

Surrounded by influences, she never truly valued honesty. Even when afforded the chance at an honest life, she discarded her chance. And that was her biggest downfall.

Choosing to side with corruption and lies, which was never sustainable. It would lead to the complete destruction of the life that she built.

Two important reasons influenced her. Her past. And her surroundings.

“You can’t change your past, can you?” sighed Sam.

“In a way, you can. If you genuinely chose right over wrong, kindness over rudeness, and patience over anger, you could change everything.” Tom softly replied back.

Sam was confused. What had she done for the past 21 years? One lie after another. One masking the other. She never thought she would get caught. And then be completely exposed.

But in a series of unprecedented events, she realised. She would finally have to pay the price.

“Why? Why didn’t you take the best opportunity of your life? One chance after another. Yet you didn’t”, Tom said disappointedly.

“I don’t know.” was the answer.

Sam had been brainwashed for a long time. She forgot to see clearly. A blurry vision resembled the state of her foggy mind.

TBC.
