2 - Ego
Tom had prayed for Sam. Every single day. For more than 5 months.
For her to come back to her senses. He tried his best to make her remember. He never wanted to give up on her even when she was ruthlessly cruel with him.
The images of her violent behaviour and arrogance was extremely difficult to bear but Tom was inhumanely patient.
Only because he didn’t want to destroy a sacred bond even when Sam was do hell bent on doing it.
She belittled him. Every chance she got.
She never considered how another person felt after so much abuse and humiliation. How he would still try to calm her down.
Even when he heard that he was not good enough. That he didn’t have enough money. That he didn’t have enough income.
She cared more about his money than his heart.
That’s why Sam could never give up all the materialistic things.
She wanted to shamelessly keep them. And just discard the person who worked hard to get them for her.
She was obsessed with money and fame. And she would always try to frame others.
“Your ego will destroy everything. Please don’t be so arrogant.” Tom pleaded.
But to no avail. Tom lost count.
On how many times he tried to convince Sam to do the right thing.
She never listened.
If she did, she would truly be one of the best people on earth.
Yet, her ego was more important to her. More important than all the kindness in the world. More important than all the happy memories with Tom.
That was one of her similarities with her father. Ego and violence.
Yet there was one more similarity. She was a cheater as well.
She would cheat on her own spouse. And not feel guilt or remorse.
Who else would keep his mouth shut other than Tom? Very likely not one soul in this world who loved and respected his wife so much.
But that was what people like Sam and Tito took advantage of.
Advantage of kindness and patience. They were both criminals and liars and they both suffered the same fate. Nobody would ever respect people who cheat on their spouses.
Ego. Arrogance. And ungrateful.
She never apologised. As if saying sorry was a weakness.
She learnt it from her family. That you should never say sorry. No matter how rude or cruel you are.
And that made her confused.
On one side, Tom would remind her of fairness and kindness to others. But on the other side, her family made Sam their carbon copy. Violent, ungrateful and completely shameless.
But why did Sam choose to be a fraud when she could have been a role model for good instead of bad?
Was she so brainwashed? Or was she evil from the very beginning?
Anyone would think Sam was a sociopath. Who loved playing the victim.
But there was more. Her immediate environment made her cruel and ruthless. As well as cunning.
But why and how on earth could a wife be so cunning to her own partner? It felt impossible to Tom.
No person could be that cunning. No person could be that shameless.
But Tom was wrong.
Some people can lose the greatest chance of their life just because of their ego and anger. And not even the most patient person on earth can save someone who wants to give up something so important so easily.
As if they’re a robot.
A robot with ego. But without a heart.
